Sweet peas, anemones, carnations, lilac and fritillaria — five flowers that don’t usually end up in the same bouquet, gathered here in dusty pink, mauve and white against black. The lilac brings volume, dense clusters that read almost like texture rather than individual flowers. The anemones cut through with their dark centers and stark white faces, the only sharp note in an otherwise soft palette. Carnations and sweet peas fill the in-between spaces, and the fritillaria’s checkered petals are easy to miss on first look — and worth finding on the second.
Medley is the right word. Nothing here is matched or ordered; it’s flowers from different corners of the same spring, held together by color rather than species.
This is one of those compositions where the palette did most of the work.
