Long-stemmed French tulips and gloriosa lilies — two flowers that bring completely different qualities to a composition. The tulips with their clean, arching stems and their particular way of continuing to move and grow even after cutting. The gloriosa lilies with their extraordinary star-shaped blooms, each petal curling dramatically backward. Between them, anemones adding their dark centers and open faces.
The word the current title uses — hugging — is exactly right. These flowers are in genuine conversation with each other, the tulip stems curving toward the gloriosa as if drawn there by something instinctive.
This is one of those compositions where the flowers did most of the work.
