A single French tulip stem already has elegance to spare — that long, graceful line, one flower head at the top. Here, though, dozens of them came together, head to head, each one a slightly different size, shade and variety. Bunched this closely, you stop seeing one tulip and start noticing the small differences between all of them: a rounder bloom beside a more pointed one, a paler shade next to a deeper one.
That closeness is what makes this image. Nothing was staged into a single, perfect shape — it’s simply what dozens of beautiful, ordinary French tulips look like when they’re allowed to be this near to each other.
This is one of those compositions where the tulips, just being themselves, did most of the work.
